Videos Have No Sound On XBox 360 [Fixed]
So, last night I was trying to watch an AVI video file from a USB flash drive on my XBox 360. For some reason, no matter what I did with the audio settings (on the XBox or the television), I couldn’t get any audio. The video worked fine.
Another strange thing I noticed was that the audio portion of the intro that plays when the XBox is turned on was no longer playing. I still had sound effects on the Dashboard, and games behaved normally. A real puzzler.
I should mention that my XBox is connected to my TV via HDMI. And this brings me to the solution of this issue.
After spending about a half-hour fiddling with the audio settings, I finally determined that it’s got to be something with the HDMI cable. Something to do with audio compatibility. So, I went downstairs and grabbed my HD cables that come with the XBox and hooked it up. Voila! Fully functional sound!
I’m not sure on the details of this, but it probably has something to do with the audio codec configuration and sound compatibility with HDMI. When using the standard HD cables that came with the XBox, the sound works normally.
That’s what I’ve been able to conclude. If you have additional information, leave it in the “Comments” section.
Update as of 7/19/2009
I’ve discovered that actually turning the television off and back on resolves the issue. So, it appears this could be a television issue and not an XBox issue.
I am having the same problem. Were you able to use both the HDMI cable and the HD cables simultaneously?
No, I was unable to use both. The end of the HD cables is just large enough to cover part of the HDMI port.
Holy s@!t. thank you so much. I have been battling this problem for months and could not figure it out. So many times uninstalling and reinstalling codecs and then videos I downloaded from Xbox live weren’t working either but all the little sound effects in the dashboard were. So very very frustrating. Cheers to you!! Thanks so much again!!!!!!!!

For the record, I am using HDMI right now and just cycled the power on my philips 42″ LCD HDTV, I am using one of the three rear HDMI ports. I am using a dynex HDMI 6′ cable.
I have a Philips 42″ LCD as well and was having the same problem with xbox live downloaded videos. This also worked for me!
Thanks!
Same Situation over here! Xbox 360, Phillips LCD TV, HDMI, no sound. Solution worked perfectly! Thanks a lot!
No problem! It’s just a hassle to have to keep turning the TV on and off just to get the sound to work. lol
Omg!
I think i love you, spent the last hour on google to see if anyone knew what to do and the answer was so simple as to turn the tv on and off :D
Edit:
I figured out that everytime i get a codec error when i cant watch a certain avi file i get the same audio bug, but the problem is still resolved by turning the tv on and off
Thanks, just got this issue a couple of days ago…but for me it was some videos not all. Grabbed a new, sound is back on all videos
Thank you, must be something with hdmi automatism. Spent days to make it work, never tried turning off and on the tv. Using a Sony Bravia, now it’s ok :-)
WTF?? I had never had this problem until I started watching instant stream movies from netflix. Idk? Why my audio is going away, but turing the tv on and off works… Thanks guys
Thanks mate! I think I love you! ..and I know my Xbox does, cause you just saved it from beeing thrown out the window!
Unhooking and re-hooking the HDMI cable at the TV end resolves this issue
Thanks! Simply turning off my TV and then back on worked!
I just called the help line and after a fiasco I was put through to an advanced tech. He told me to turn off my xbox and remove the harddrive. Then turn it back on, let it boot up, then plug in the harddrive while it was on. It fixed my sound issue right away. This fix worked for me but I’m just useing a straight HDMI cable from the Xbox to the TV so if you have a different connection method I don’t know if it’ll work,,, give it a shot I don’t see why it wouldn’t.
OH MY GOD!!!!!! Weeks ive been dealing with this. After hearing 360 could now run .avi’s i jumped at the chance. Ive tried every other setting imaginable but never thought to just turn my tv off and on…. Thank you so much
Thank you! I’ve been dealing with this for years, even tried Xbox support and gave up with them. Powercycling th TV does indeed fix it. Phillips 42″ LCD here as well.
Thank you it worked for us just by switching the TV off and again :) very happy!
Phillips 47″ LCD…turn on/off did the trick. Thanks!
yep ive had this problem for a year until i found this. tv on and on sorts it out. thanks !
better if i actually said on and off!
Wow! I’ve been battling this on and off for weeks. Thanks. I have a Phillips 47″ LCD also. I connect the 360 via hdmi cable directly to my tv. What an easy fix.
Turning on and off my Philips 37 worked for me too!
I found this solution by myself, but I wouldnt call it a solution.
Because problem exists, this is only workaround.
My xbox had a sound setting set to 5.1 sound, changed it to stereo now.
Will check if sound problem repeats itself again.
I think tv could be loosing sound because it has a different setting then xbox, and some times switching back to tv it stays on xbox sound setting.
Weird that nobody reported this to philips as from people coments this is not only with 42” tvs.
I guess it is another philips feature as the slow channel change :(
You can also just go to system settings>console settings>audio>digital
output>and then select digital stereo and still just use your hdmi cable, at least it worked for me.
Power-cycling my Pioneer VSX-9140TXH audio/video receiver seemed to do the trick.
Same problem here on a 38″ philips hd, noticed this problem a couple of times but was more of an irritation up to today when wanted to watch movies and nothing! perfect fix! thanks a million mate! irritating to have to keep turning on and off but hell if it works!!! cheers!
Ok. Here’s my problem. It kind of deals with the same thing but it doesn’t. I’m looking for some help as I haven’t been able to get any yet. My 360 has a major problem. First of all I’ve never played it online as I have not signed up for Xbox Live yet. I only play offline. My system is connected through HDMI on the back of my Toshiba Rezga LCD TV. I have went through all possible steps to get sound to play. Bought new cables, Xbox 360 system updates, calling Xbox customer support and even sent it to them just to have it sent back saying that they tested it and found nothing wrong. When I play games they either freeze up or the sound cuts out and then it freezes. This happens with all my games EXCEPT for Tiger Woods ’09. Any suggestions?
haha… so simple, why didn’t i think of just turning off the tv? well anyway thanks it helpped :)
Yep i had same prob and by turning of tv and back on it fixed it, really strange, my tv is a sony bravia
I have tried power cycling my TV, restarting my Xbox, and still nothing. I am using standard non-HD AV cables. My TV is a 32″ RCA, and it started doing this the day the second to last update for Xbox was released.
thank you for the solution!! it would play one episode of “the wire” then boom no sound on the rest. wish i looked on here instead of downloading 3 different torrents for season one.
I tried what Peter said, turned it off, removed hard drive, turned it back on and put the hard drive back in while it was at the dashboard. The console restarted and showed the xbox logo with sound this time.
Thanks a bunch, it works. :) I was starting to think about needing a new hdmi cable.
im still having the same problem i tried everything and still not working :(
Hello everyone! My boyfriend was having this same problem and after a bit of exploration in the settings, I found a solution that enabled us to still use the HDMI cable :)
If you go into the Xbox dashboard, then go into System Settings, then Console Settings, Display, Display Discovery then select: enable (ours was disabled). This worked for us so I hope it will help you!!
Tv on off worked!
Switching tv off and on doesn’t work for me :(
try changing the aspect ratio (zoom in zoom out) works for me perfectly each time :)
Having same problem w/ 47″ Phillips
Gotta be the phillips tv way to many people with this problem I have a phillips 42 same problem
TV Off/On worked on my 37″ LG for LoveFilm but not with Netflix, this is because if you switch off the TV the connection is lost
Have the same problem, only with HD cables and not an HDMI cable. Turning the TV off and then back on didn’t work though, any suggestions?
If you have the option, try switching to an HDMI cable. See if that makes any difference.
Thank you, this was driving hubby crazy. Now he’s happy and I have some peace and quiet.
Changing the display discovery settings (under Display) to “Disable” fixed the HDMI sound for me. Now am battling how to stream video from Hulu.. says no secure link but get sound.. even when HDMI hooked directly to TV. Non-HD OEM cables work.
im gettig the same with lg 42″ non of the fixes seem too work for me
Got it working with LG 42″ change the aspect ratio sound comes on perfectly each time hope this helps
if you have a surround system u can go straight from that into your hd lead with an aux splitter instead of going to the tv that worked for me. also just to add if u remove the case from ur hd cable tht plugs into your xbox u can fit your hdmi cable in the xbox aswell came over this issue wen connecting up my headset
SAFE
Interesting solution. Didn’t know you could have both of them hooked up at once.
for some movie/tv files with both cables plugged in i get audio thru my headset but not my surround system, video works fine and games etc play audio thru both just not with some video files??
wow on and off thanks google and thanks people with more common sense than me haha
Thanks so much. We have had this problem for months. Can’t believe there was such an easy solution. We have a 46″ Philips LCD. Thanks again!!!
Wish I knew what actually caused the problem. Just know that off and on fixes it.
awesome dude, you save my marriage. I was about to blame my wife.
Haha That’s great! Glad I could help.
You are a total star ~ thanks for the info !!!
No problem! I’ve gotten that reaction quite a bit on this post.
awesome dude…….off/on sorted it…… and switching tv to dynamic mode make the picture loads better :)
Funny how such a simple thing could fix the problem!
Thank you very much. I was racking my brains trying to figure out what was going wrong with the sound on my xbox until I read this post…switched my TV off and on again and all working fine.
Thanks again!
Off/On amazing. 2hours messing with settings and that’s all I had to do. Thanks for the post!
fixed the problem for me, many thanks :)
Same problem here. Philips 50inch plasma… Only when I play a dvd..
One solution is to use iDealshare VideoGo to convert your videos to Xbox 360 more supported one
