So Your iPod Won’t Eject?
You’re updating your iPod in iTunes. It finishes and simply says, “iPod Sync Is Complete.” What? No “OK To Disconnect” message?*
What do you do? You click “Eject.” What happens? A message saying something to the effect that your iPod can’t disconnect because files on your iPod are currently being used. What happens next? You keep clicking “Eject” over and over again, of course. Still nothing. Same result.
Here’s the solution.
Open up “My Computer” (for Vista users, that’s “Computer”) and look for your iPod in the list of drives and removable storage. Right-click on it and click “Eject!” And there you go. Ejected iPod. Don’t believe me? Just go back to iTunes and see that you’ve been ejected.
Read a book.
*As a side note, if you have “Enable Disk Use” checked on your iPod screen in iTunes, you will never get the “OK To Disconnect” message. You will have to manually eject your iPod every time you connect it. And don’t just unplug it. You will screw up files on your iPod if you don’t manually click eject every time before you unplug it.
YOU SAVED ME. thank you!
wow, thanks, i’ve been seaerching forever to find the help to this…but
1) how to disable disk use
2) what does enabling or disabling do for my ipod
thanks
Perfect advice. I often get this error message when trying to eject. Previously, if I waited a moment and hit eject again, it would work. But today it gave me that message over and over and when I followed your advice, my ipod was instantly ejected. Thanks!
thanks sooo much
Excellent piece of advice. After stumbling through countless google listings, I found yours and it actually works. Will post a link to this on my blog. Thanks again!
Mark
Sweet! thanks! I really thought I was stuck, seeing my internet explorer was down and itunes kept freezing up, and I couldn’t disconnect my ipod. Thank you so much!!
OMG OMG OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! u saved me dude thx a looot!!it was my bros ipod…he wud haf killed me!!!u r so coool u rok man!thx dude!!! u rok…!and i recommend u plz change d name of the site..k???if u want
I tried to “Eject” and “Safely Remove” via Windows Explorer, and I get the same message. I hate to have to shut down, but I think it may be the only way.
Didn’t work for me either. I still get the message saying it’s being used by another application.
WHY is it sooooo much easier to google the answer than even bother to look in help or on the itunes site.
1000 MILLION thanks….
I feel the same way. I never go to the “Official” site of any product before consulting Google. Blogs always seem to have a solution.
That’s the approach I take with my blog. If I have a problem with something… anything… I find a solution and I publish it. More than likely, the problem hasn’t been solved yet.
And if it has been, I write about it and link to the blog that has solved the problem.
Oh God, thank you so much…I kept trying to eject and I was getting worried. Thought something was wrong with my iPod. Thanks a bunch, iTunes Help is sometimes a bitch to go through.
It works!!!! Thank you. Vic
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCHHHHHHH!!!!! I just bought it and its my 3rd iPod, and I added the songs and then it wouldn’t eject! I was gonna just unplug it, then i stumbled across your advise, THANKS AGAIN, it really helped.
THANKS MAN!!!!!!!!!!!! IT REALLY WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW ! thanks a ton ! saved me so much effort ! It was almost too easy lol and now I’m worried I sound like those people on Infomercials that don’t really work at all ;) anywho, you saved me and my Ipod’s life !! <3 :D
FINALLY !!! Geez, Thank you SOOOOOO much. I have spent endless nights trying everything to get ITunes/Ipod to EJECT
Well, I wasn’t done typing…..so to continue. It would keep my Ipod hostage for hours and then finally for whatever reason it would finally eject. I’d wake up in the morning and IT would STILL be sitting there. Arrrrg!!! THANK YOU AGAIN !!!!!! I can continue on with my precious time now.
Thank U !!! God bless you you saved me!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic! You win at life! I needed this fix desperately today….
Thanks for that…! I’m no longer swearing and spitting at my iPod. I’m happy again.
thank u so much!! dis really helped!!! :)
Worked for me!
Thanks.
IT WORKED! THANKS SO MUCH! [:
Umm, is there anotehr name for ‘iPod’ in your ‘My Computer’ folder? I cannot find it, and I cannot see how to eject it…. I’m stuck :[
I tried everything listed above with no luck. Then I thought of something else. I was leaving my cable in the USB port and just unhooking the nano. I rebooted, the nano said ‘OK to disconnect’ which I did and then I pulled the cable from the USB port. Then I plugged the cable and nano back in, synced it, and the ‘OK to disconnect’ message came up. No more message saying it was in use by other files or whatever. Did this 5 or 6 times already and it works every time. Think something must be staying behind in regards to the USB port when you remove the nano but not the cable.
Ya this worked for me 2!
Thank you SO much. Bravo! [clap clap clap clappity clap]
THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks so much for this solution. I haven’t been able to eject through iTunes for a while and this worked perfectly….

IT WORKS!!! dude i love you! you saved my life, its so simple now that i know! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU :d
Thank you!!! That did the trick!
Thank you so much!! :] xx
The problem can be avoided if you note the following… If you launch Itunes first then plug your IPOD into the USB port, you should be able to disconnect using the Itunes eject function. If you plug the IPOD into the USB port before launching windows, the computer sees it as an external drive device and takes ownership of it before Itunes does. That is why Itunes will not eject it because it sees it in use by another device, your computer, hence why you must eject it from the computer side. Looks like Apple was trying to avoid contending devices so I wouldn’t necessarily call it a software glitch. Best bet, unless you are going to use it directly as a drive, always launch Itunes before connecting it.
pretty good lesson! ;)
Thanks–I was at point of screaming!!!!
Ok, So I tried all the tips listed above, and even tried just pulling it out of frustration! But all I get is Error messages on my comp, things saying its being used, and 0 songs and stuff on my ipod! I’m at a loss. :[
This was happening to me.. But somehow when i use winamp, it shows all the songs on my ipod n i’m able to play. Whenever i use winamp to copy music to local media, the ipod started showing in itunes too.. I tried ejecting from winamp n what do you know, it works like a charm..
You are a genious!!!<3
Thank you, I had this problem before and did what you said not too and that was just unplug it, now I can’t see my audio podcast heading in my list of podcast, but I know it’s there because the scroll bar goes all the way to the top where I can’t see it but yet I’m able to click it and then I see my list of audio podcast….weird huh?! anyway perhaps it’s just an old iPod and on it’s way out.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks again.

Wow. If you idiots really had to look this up, you shouldn’t be using a computer.
GO TO HELL!
Thank you – so simple but saved me loads of time!
Thank you so much. I was starting to freak out because if I didn’t figure it out my brother would’ve told me I broke something somehow.
I love you, man.
Thanks for the advice it was o so simple! But when u don’t know you just don’t know. So what was the read a book about????
very helpful! thankyou :D
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! When I followed your instructions I got a message that said, “Try Again,” “Continue,” “Cancel” … I choose “CONTINUE” and it worked! Wow, what a relief!!!! THANKS!
Thank you so much!!!! GAWD I love Google – you find everything you need whne you need it.
It did not work for me im on a Windows XP computer and when i do this i still have no songs or videos
Thank you this saved me!
THANK YOU!!!
You’re welcome!
Thank you very much, don’t know I would manage in the techo world without these sites.
I am impressed. Thank you. Your suggest worked. NOTE: What happened is the ipod icon no longer appears in itunes, however, on my ipod, it still said “DO NOT DiSCONNECT” which got me concerend. Do not worry. After about 1-2 minutes, the “do not Disconnect” message disappeared on my ipod & i was able to safely disconnect. i suspect since i have close to 60GB of music on my ipod, it took some time for the ipod to shut down.
Thanks a bunch worked just as you said.
Sncly Lez
Many thanks it worked – Simon. Pity Apple don’t tell you this with their message!
Wow. You people are all so f*cking dumb. You couldn’t figure that out by yourselves, without googling it? None of you deserve to use a computer. Fools.
Wow, yeah thanks for that.
How do I manually disconnect my ipod?? I am not able to uncheck the “disable disk use” box, it is gray.
I just figured out the manual eject, but it gives me the same message.
I’ve done that but I’ve gotten another message saying ”?’s iPod is still in use. save any open files on this disk’ but I’ve closed iTunes. I’ve only recently started getting either of these messages though, it was fine about a week or so ago.
my ipod is not showing up when I go to my computer.
Forget my last comment…I found it when I opened up itunes. It worked.
I find that I have to close any browsers as well as iTunes to eject my iPod Nanno (5th gen)
You rock!!! Thanks for the advise – worked like a charm!
Brilliant! Thank you!!
This worked! Thank you!!!
For quick fix (i.e., to eject your usb device), this procedure is okay. However, if you want to restore your iPod using iTunes, you will get the same application in use message, which prevents you from restoring your iPod (at least using iTunes).
Genius – thank you.
THANK YOOOOOU, SOOOOO MUCH! You are a lifesaver.
