So Your iPod Won’t Eject?

You’re updating your iPod in iTunes. It finishes and simply says, “iPod Sync Is Complete.” What? No “OK To Disconnect” message?*

What do you do? You click “Eject.” What happens? A message saying something to the effect that your iPod can’t disconnect because files on your iPod are currently being used. What happens next? You keep clicking “Eject” over and over again, of course. Still nothing. Same result.

Here’s the solution.

Open up “My Computer” (for Vista users, that’s “Computer”) and look for your iPod in the list of drives and removable storage. Right-click on it and click “Eject!” And there you go. Ejected iPod. Don’t believe me? Just go back to iTunes and see that you’ve been ejected.

Read a book.

*As a side note, if you have “Enable Disk Use” checked on your iPod screen in iTunes, you will never get the “OK To Disconnect” message. You will have to manually eject your iPod every time you connect it. And don’t just unplug it. You will screw up files on your iPod if you don’t manually click eject every time before you unplug it.

Perfect advice. I often get this error message when trying to eject. Previously, if I waited a moment and hit eject again, it would work. But today it gave me that message over and over and when I followed your advice, my ipod was instantly ejected. Thanks!

I tried to “Eject” and “Safely Remove” via Windows Explorer, and I get the same message. I hate to have to shut down, but I think it may be the only way.

WHY is it sooooo much easier to google the answer than even bother to look in help or on the itunes site.

    1000 MILLION thanks….

    • Sunday March 1, 2009 at 5:17 PM

I feel the same way. I never go to the “Official” site of any product before consulting Google. Blogs always seem to have a solution.

That’s the approach I take with my blog. If I have a problem with something… anything… I find a solution and I publish it. More than likely, the problem hasn’t been solved yet.

And if it has been, I write about it and link to the blog that has solved the problem.

    • Saturday October 3, 2009 at 2:37 PM

Well, I wasn’t done typing…..so to continue. It would keep my Ipod hostage for hours and then finally for whatever reason it would finally eject. I’d wake up in the morning and IT would STILL be sitting there. Arrrrg!!! THANK YOU AGAIN !!!!!! I can continue on with my precious time now.

I tried everything listed above with no luck. Then I thought of something else. I was leaving my cable in the USB port and just unhooking the nano. I rebooted, the nano said ‘OK to disconnect’ which I did and then I pulled the cable from the USB port. Then I plugged the cable and nano back in, synced it, and the ‘OK to disconnect’ message came up. No more message saying it was in use by other files or whatever. Did this 5 or 6 times already and it works every time. Think something must be staying behind in regards to the USB port when you remove the nano but not the cable.

The problem can be avoided if you note the following… If you launch Itunes first then plug your IPOD into the USB port, you should be able to disconnect using the Itunes eject function. If you plug the IPOD into the USB port before launching windows, the computer sees it as an external drive device and takes ownership of it before Itunes does. That is why Itunes will not eject it because it sees it in use by another device, your computer, hence why you must eject it from the computer side. Looks like Apple was trying to avoid contending devices so I wouldn’t necessarily call it a software glitch. Best bet, unless you are going to use it directly as a drive, always launch Itunes before connecting it.

Thank you, I had this problem before and did what you said not too and that was just unplug it, now I can’t see my audio podcast heading in my list of podcast, but I know it’s there because the scroll bar goes all the way to the top where I can’t see it but yet I’m able to click it and then I see my list of audio podcast….weird huh?! anyway perhaps it’s just an old iPod and on it’s way out.

    Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks again.

I am impressed. Thank you. Your suggest worked. NOTE: What happened is the ipod icon no longer appears in itunes, however, on my ipod, it still said “DO NOT DiSCONNECT” which got me concerend. Do not worry. After about 1-2 minutes, the “do not Disconnect” message disappeared on my ipod & i was able to safely disconnect. i suspect since i have close to 60GB of music on my ipod, it took some time for the ipod to shut down.

For quick fix (i.e., to eject your usb device), this procedure is okay. However, if you want to restore your iPod using iTunes, you will get the same application in use message, which prevents you from restoring your iPod (at least using iTunes).
